Hundreds of supporters take to the streets following Călin Georgescu's arrest
More than 300 people gathered on Tuesday evening outside Central Detention in Bucharest to contest the decision to remand the former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu in custody for 30 days, according to Gândul.
The crowd chanted "Freedom", "Călin Georgescu president" and "Second round, return". Amongst the demonstrators was politician Marian Vanghelie, whom protesters called upon to act for Georgescu's release.
"I am not afraid of anything, only of God," Vanghelie told those present.
Some of the demonstrators brought a cross the size of a funeral cross, inscribed with messages critical of the judicial system.
The protests began on Tuesday evening, immediately after Georgescu was taken by police from his home in Mogoșoaia and transported to Central Detention. Several hundred people gathered outside the building at that time, and some of them remained in the area throughout the night. The following morning, several dozen supporters were still at the scene, with gendarmes delimiting the area with protective barriers.
The Bucharest Court of Appeal ordered on Tuesday, 29 September, that both Călin Georgescu and businessman Ionel Rusen be remanded in custody for 30 days. The decision was adopted by a panel called to resolve a divergence of opinion, after two judges who were initially examining the case did not reach the same conclusion regarding applicable preventive measures.
