A 44-year-old man held in preventive custody for driving under the influence of alcohol died in hospital on 18 September, several days after being found unconscious in a cell at the Remand and Preventive Custody Centre of the Maramureș County Police Inspectorate, according to ProTV News.
On 8 September, a police patrol stopped the man's car on Regele Ferdinand Boulevard in Baia Mare. An alcohol test indicated a concentration of 2.00 mg/l of pure alcohol in exhaled air. After being taken to hospital for the collection of biological samples, the toxicology report confirmed a blood alcohol level of 4.00 g/l of pure alcohol. The court issued a remand custody warrant on 11 September.
On 14 September, detention centre staff found him unconscious in the holding cell. "Specialist medical assistance was requested immediately", according to the Maramureș County Police Inspectorate's Public Relations Department. The man was transferred to a medical facility, where he remained hospitalised until 18 September, "when, unfortunately, he was declared deceased", according to the same source.
Police maintain that internal checks revealed no irregularities: "Based on the information and evidence resulting from the checks carried out, no suspicions were identified regarding the conditions in which the medical condition that necessitated the man's hospitalisation arose." The investigation continues under the direction of the investigating prosecutor.
The body was taken to the Baia Mare Forensic Medicine Service. An autopsy, scheduled for Monday, 21 September, is expected to determine the exact causes of death.
