69-year-old man killed on road in Cetate; Bulgarian driver arrested after international cooperation

A 31-year-old Bulgarian citizen fatally struck a pedestrian on Friday in the locality of Cetate in Dolj County, then fled the scene of the accident, Gândul reports, citing Mediafax.

The victim, a 69-year-old man originally from Timiș County, was discovered lying on the roadway by passers-by, who immediately alerted the authorities. Upon arrival of the emergency crews, doctors could do nothing — death had already been established.

Romanian authorities immediately launched a search for the fleeing driver. Through cooperation with police officers from Bulgaria, they managed to identify the person responsible for the accident. The man subsequently presented himself voluntarily at the police headquarters in Calafat, where he was detained for 24 hours.

The Bulgarian citizen is being investigated for involuntary manslaughter and for leaving the scene of the accident without the authorisation of police authorities. He is to be presented to the Prosecutor's Office attached to Calafat District Court with a proposal for preventive arrest.
