Pro-Russian former Romanian presidential candidate Călin Georgescu was taken into custody early in the morning, according to Proto Thema. The 64-year-old politician is accused of fraud and formation of a criminal organisation that received over one million euros from Russian citizens.
The arrest operation was carried out by Romanian police, which mobilised significant forces. Video footage from the operation circulated on social media and captured the details of the arrest.
Georgescu had already been prosecuted for unconstitutional actions following the annulment of the 2024 presidential elections, in which he had emerged as a leading candidate. The new case is added to pending charges against him, expanding the scope of the criminal prosecutions he faces.
The politician is described as the "puppet candidate" of the Kremlin in the 2024 Romanian elections, elections that were cancelled amid allegations of Russian interference.
