Georgescu supporter detained after assaulting two cameramen with metallic object

A 50-year-old man known in online circles as "Dacul Liber" and identified as a supporter of Călin Georgescu, was taken by police officers and brought in for questioning at Police Precinct 10, according to Cotidianul.ro. Following his questioning, he was charged.

The incident occurred on 5 October 2026, in front of DIICOT headquarters in Sector 3 of the capital. "The Police of the Capital informs that, on 5 October 2026, we received a report that two representatives of the mass media had been assaulted by a man in front of a public institution in Sector 3. From initial checks conducted, it was established that the reported facts are confirmed, with the victims being intentionally struck with a metallic object," said representatives of the Police of the Capital.

The assault took place at the moment when journalists were attempting to obtain statements from Călin Georgescu's father-in-law, who was being questioned in the fraud case involving the former presidential election candidate. The investigation is being continued by Police Precinct 10, with legal measures to be ordered by the competent prosecutor's office.

Representatives of the Police of the Capital issued a statement condemning any form of assault on journalists. "Freedom of the press and the safety of journalists must be respected, and any act of violence is treated with firmness and investigated promptly by police officers," the statement said.

The incident is not isolated. Another Georgescu supporter, Cătălin Avrămuță, known as "Stegarul Dac", struck a gendarme during protests in front of the Central Police Detention Facility in Bucharest, where Călin Georgescu is imprisoned.

The former presidential candidate is in detention after the Bucharest Court of Appeal ordered his detention for 30 days, a final decision handed down as a result of the objection filed by DIICOT against the Bucharest Court's decision to place him under judicial control. DIICOT is pursuing Georgescu criminally in a fraud case in which the loss is estimated at one million euro, according to the investigators.
