Killer of Anda Ghiurco, sentenced to life, remains at large after a year
In the summer of last year, a 23-year-old woman died in her own home in a locality in Mureș county, at the hands of her former partner. Anda Ghiurco was murdered, and her body was set on fire. The attacker, Emil Gânj, fled immediately and has not been found since.
The victim had previously appealed to police, reporting that she had been kidnapped and raped by the same man. The attacker already had a murder conviction on his record and had been released from prison five years before his sentence was due to end.
For over 12 months, law enforcement has been searching for Gânj in various regions of the country and there is a European arrest warrant in his name. Anda's family is living in terror, fearing that the killer might return. The victim's mother and child have abandoned the village and have been placed in a specialist centre for witness protection.
Nor do the relatives remaining in Miheșu de Câmpie feel safe. The girl's aunt received threats from the fugitive's brother, Iacob Gânj, who was ordered by the court to wear an electronic surveillance device and to maintain distance from her. Another sister of his filed a similar complaint.
Despite the permanent presence of a police team in the locality, the perpetrator of the crime has not been located. The trial proceeded without him, and approximately 30 days ago the judges handed down a final sentence of life imprisonment.
