A teenager from Gothenburg has been sentenced to nearly ten years in prison after shooting a man dead following Friday prayers at a mosque in Örebro.

A man in his mid-20s had just finished Friday prayers at a mosque in Örebro when he was shot. Three bullets struck him in the back, after which the perpetrator stepped forward and fired additional shots at him. A 17-year-old boy from Gothenburg has now been sentenced to a lengthy prison term for the brutal act.
Prosecutor Mats Ihlbom called the act "an execution" when the charges were brought. The shooting took place after the victim left the prayer hall together with other congregation members.
The 17-year-old, who was 16 years old at the time of the crime, has connections to a criminal network in Borås. He travelled to Örebro a few days before the act and took a place in the mosque during Friday prayers. When prayers ended, he followed the crowd out and opened fire near the car park.
The victim, a 27-year-old man, died from his injuries. Another man was injured in the arm. Police have linked the act to the ongoing conflict between criminal gangs in Örebro. The dead man was suspected of having a leading role in a local network.
According to the investigation, the teenager acted on orders from older men who were abroad. The act was monitored via video call from Egypt, where a 23-year-old man is identified as the mastermind behind the murder.
Örebro District Court now sentences the 17-year-old to nine years and ten months in prison. The court views the act as a murder and an attempted murder. The sentence is longer than what is usual for a person under 18 years of age, which is justified by the serious nature of the crime.
Several other people have also been sentenced in the same case. A 23-year-old man who was in Cairo at the time of the act is sentenced to life imprisonment for planning and ordering the shooting. A 26-year-old man present in Örebro is also sentenced to life imprisonment for identifying the target. A further 29-year-old man is sentenced to life imprisonment for aiding and abetting.
The court establishes that the murder took place in a gang conflict and that this is an aggravating circumstance. For the adult perpetrators, there is no other sentence than life imprisonment, according to chief judge Johan Alvner.
