Nybro man manipulated accident date to trigger full insurance coverage

A 23-year-old man from Nybro has been convicted of fraud against Folksam Ömsesidig Sakförsäkring after stating an incorrect date for a single-vehicle accident to trigger entitlement to full insurance compensation. According to sakochliv.se, the accident occurred on 18 August last year when the man drove off the road with his 2009 Skoda Superb. At that time, the car was half-insured with Folksam. Immediately after the accident, he contacted the company to upgrade the insurance to full coverage – and then reported the claim with the date of 19 August, the day after the upgrade came into effect.

According to the prosecution, he thereby misled Folksam into paying out 54,457 kronor in insurance compensation, despite the fact that he was not entitled to compensation at the time of the actual accident.

The man claimed he had mistakenly entered the wrong date. Kalmar District Court did not accept that explanation.

"By changing the scope of his motor insurance to full coverage and submitting a claim, [the defendant] misled Folksam into paying him insurance compensation totalling 54,457 kronor despite the fact that at the time of the accident on 18 August 2025, he was not entitled to such compensation," the court wrote in its judgment.

The court found that the act was committed with intent and that the prosecution case was proven.

The penalty value for the fraud offence corresponds to two months' imprisonment, but the sentence is determined to be conditional. The district court justified this on the grounds that the man has no prior criminal record and there is no reason to believe he will reoffend. In addition to the conditional sentence, he must pay a day fine totalling 15,000 kronor.

He has also been ordered to pay compensation to Folksam of just over 60,000 kronor. The amount covers the paid-out compensation of 54,457 kronor plus 5,000 kronor for the investigative work undertaken by the insurance company in connection with the case.

The judgment was handed down by Kalmar District Court in October.
