A 41-year-old man who worked as a bartender has been convicted of attacking a woman who had just turned 18. The assault took place in a toilet at the Stockholm nightclub where the man was employed.
The woman was in the city for a weekend with a friend and had taken a seat at the bar. When she visited the toilet, the bartender forced his way in and carried out a sexual assault.
In court, the victim stated that she was in a state of shock, froze and experienced intense shame. The perpetrator gave a completely different account of the incident, claiming that the woman had initiated contact. He also claimed that he stopped because he felt something was wrong and because he is in a relationship.
The court rejected the man's explanation as unreliable. The evidence, which included footage from security cameras, supported the victim's version. The man, who holds Turkish citizenship, has been sentenced to three years and three months in prison. He is to be deported from Sweden and must pay damages of 245,000 kronor to the woman.
