One person has been killed and several others seriously injured when an 18-year-old student attacked a school with a sword in central Sweden.

One person has died and at least two people have been seriously injured following a sword attack at Brinell secondary school in Fagersta in central Sweden on Friday. The police announced this at a press conference.

Initially, the health authority in the small town reported that at least three people had been injured. "Two people have been seriously injured (...) and a third person has been taken to hospital," said Jonas Ketterberg, adding that the condition of the third person had not yet been clarified.

Later on Friday evening, police stated that the suspected perpetrator is an 18-year-old student at the school. Reuters reported, citing the regional rescue service, that two teenagers were taken to hospital with serious injuries following the attack.

Police shot the suspect during the incident. According to reports circulating in the media during the day, the 18-year-old student was armed with a sword when he attacked several people in the school building. Some reports indicate that the perpetrator had previously been sentenced to 25 hours of youth service for assault at another school.
