A five-year-old girl was attacked with a knife at a playground in Helsingborg on the west coast of Skåne. The incident has attracted significant attention in Swedish media.
The suspected perpetrator is a boy under 15 years old. According to information provided to the evening newspaper Aftonbladet, the boy fled the scene on foot but subsequently called the emergency number himself and reported what he had done.
Police apprehended the boy shortly after the incident, but the arrest was released because of his young age. Social authorities have taken him into their care.
Park worker Axel Östlund was among the first to arrive at the scene. The girl was bleeding but standing upright. The knife was still lodged in her body, according to the evening newspaper Expressen.
"It was really good that she had enough sense not to pull it out," Östlund's supervisor Björn Svensson told Expressen.
The girl was taken to hospital and her condition is stable. Police have not commented on whether the girl and boy knew each other, or whether a knife was found at the playground.
According to Aftonbladet, the stabbing occurred without prior provocation. The offence is classified as attempted murder, and the police investigation is ongoing.
"It is important for us to create a clear picture of what happened at the scene and why," Christian Magnusson, acting local area chief at Helsingborg Police, told Aftonbladet.
