Former footballer sentenced to six years for aggravated rape
A 22-year-old former footballer has been sentenced for aggravated rape by the district court, reports Expressen. The man bound, beat, applied a chokehold and jumped on the victim during an incident in January this year.
The woman and man met in May last year. She shared an apartment in Stockholm with a friend, and during the summer the man was allowed to borrow the apartment. When she came home, they began a sexual relationship – she experienced it as a romantic relationship, whilst the man has subsequently described it as a "professional relationship" where she sold drugs for him.
According to the woman, he was kind and pleasant at first, but became increasingly controlling over time. He allegedly called her derogatory names, spat on her and applied a chokehold. In her telephone, police found lengthy conversations in which he called her a "whore" and threatened to kill her.
One evening in January, he carried out a brutal attack. He hit her in the face and body, headbutted and elbowed her, pulled her hair so that it came out, and jumped on her ribs. He also bound her hands and feet with cables.
The man has claimed that the sexual activity was consensual and admitted to the assault, but claims that it happened afterwards – a so-called "criminal settlement" after he became enraged because, according to him, she had tricked him out of money and drugs. That he initially denied everything, he explained by saying that he is a professional criminal shaped by a strong code of silence.
The district court considers his version to be disproven and sentences him for aggravated rape. He is also sentenced for assault on two previous occasions in January, as well as for two counts of drug offences. The sentence was set at six years in prison.
At the time of the rape, the man was wanted, as he had failed to appear to serve a previous prison sentence. Last year he was sentenced on two occasions for drug offences and received four months in prison for beating and threatening to kill his ex-girlfriend – a sentence that was later reduced to two months in the court of appeal.
