Knife attack on five-year-old at playground in Helsingborg
A five-year-old girl was seriously injured in a knife attack at Furutorpsplatsen in Helsingborg on Monday afternoon. A boy under the age of 15 was taken into custody by police in the surrounding area shortly afterwards.
The incident occurred at around 14.45. Axel Östlund, who works with grounds and gardening maintenance, was in the park repairing a broken swing when he heard cries for help. He ran towards the sound and found the girl with a stabbing weapon in her neck and blood on her clothes.
"I tried to talk to her and calm her down. She looked blank but was composed," he says in an interview with Sydsvenskan.
Östlund picked up the child, alerted the emergency number and then searched for the parents in the area. Abdele Abdijama, who is responsible for summer activity programmes in the park, helped to ensure that the girl did not touch the weapon or the wound. The call to emergency services advised against removing the object.
"She was surprisingly calm. The only thing she said was 'ouch, plaster'," Abdijama tells Sydsvenskan.
Staff from the leisure activities programme gathered the other children and moved them away from the scene to prevent further distress.
The rescue service arrived at the scene first, followed by an ambulance and several police patrols. The day after, representatives from Gustav Adolf parish and the Red Cross were present to offer support to those who had been in the park.
