A local Liberal Party politician in northern Sweden is suspected of a child sexual abuse material offence committed in June 2024. The man was questioned and released on bail but remains under suspicion.
Local Liberal Party official questioned over child sexual abuse material offence
A local senior politician for the Liberal Party in northern Sweden is suspected of a child sexual abuse material offence, according to Aftonbladet. According to court documents, the offences are alleged to have been committed between 18 and 20 June 2024.
The man was called in for questioning on Thursday and was subsequently released on bail. He remains under suspicion, however.
"An active investigation is underway in the usual manner. The person has been interviewed but the investigation is still at an early stage and I cannot say much at this point," says prosecutor Irene Falk, who is leading the investigation.
The man is reported to have held several positions of trust within the party in recent years as well as a number of positions in the education sector.
The party's local group leader told Aftonbladet on Friday that he was unaware of the suspicions against his party colleague.
"This is nothing I have been made aware of," says the group leader.
Aftonbladet has approached the suspect and his lawyer, who have not responded.
