Man wielding machete injured several people in Fagersthus school in Sweden
On Friday, a man armed with a machete injured several people at the Brinellskolan school in Fagersthus. Police detained the individual after shooting him in the leg.
Machete attack in Fagersthus: several injured, attacker detained
On Friday afternoon in Fagersthus, central Sweden, a man armed with a machete broke into Brinellskolan secondary school and injured several people, reported 15min. The municipality of Fagersthus, located north-west of Stockholm, reported on the incident.
The municipality did not specify the exact number of injured. It also informed that police were searching the school, and other educational institutions in the area were temporarily closed.
The newspaper Aftonbladet reported that police officers shot the attacker in the leg. Police spokesperson Pelle Vamstad, cited by news agency TT, stated that the report of the incident was received in the early afternoon and officers hurried to the scene. Vamstad also noted that it would be investigated whether video footage could assist the investigation.
Public broadcaster SVT reported that ambulances, police cars and a helicopter were stationed near the school in a city of approximately 12,000 residents.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed regret on social media platform X over the serious incident that occurred "right after the summer holidays". "Reports have been received about injured people. We do not yet know what lies behind this act, but the police are working very intensively," he wrote, adding that his thoughts were with all those affected.
This is not the first high-profile attack at Swedish educational institutions. In February 2025, a 35-year-old man killed 10 people at an adult education centre in Erebre – the country's largest mass shooting. In March 2022, an 18-year-old student fatally stabbed two teachers at a school in Malmö. In October 2015, a man armed with a sword attacked a school in Trollhattan, killing three people in a racially motivated attack, and was shot dead by police.
