A man in his 50s died over the weekend after being assaulted in central Karlstad. According to Expressen, two men in their 20s were arrested shortly after the incident and are now suspected of murder.
Police were alerted during the night into Sunday about an ongoing fight in the city centre. At the scene, the man was found with serious injuries. He later died from his injuries, whereupon the suspicions against the arrested men were escalated from aggravated assault to murder.
– The suspects are known to each other, says prosecutor Cecilia Aronsson, who is also leading the preliminary investigation.
The two men, however, had no connection with the deceased. Aronsson is unwilling to explain at this stage why the fight broke out and how the assault took place.
– I cannot comment on any details from the investigation, she says.
Police report that a number of people were at the crime scene at the time and now wish to contact anyone who may have seen or heard anything.
– If anyone believes they have necessary information, they are welcome to contact the police, says Aronsson.
Investigators are also examining whether the incident may have been captured on CCTV or other footage.
– We are working on that and looking to see if that might be the case, says the prosecutor.
By Wednesday at the latest, Aronsson is to decide whether the men should be remanded in custody. What they have stated during interviews or their stance on the suspicions are matters the prosecutor chooses not to comment on.
