A man in his 30s has died after being shot by police during a car chase on national road 73 in Nynäshamn outside Stockholm, reports nsd.se. The man was suspected of kidnapping and attempted murder of his own children.

Police were alerted at 20.18 on Tuesday evening to a suspected serious crime in the Stockholm area. During the evening, police searched for a car driven by the suspected man. The sought-after car was found shortly before 22.00, after which a brief car chase began.

– During the pursuit, the car drove into a barrier and stopped, states Carina Skagerlind, press spokesperson for the Stockholm police.

During the night, police announced that an officer had fired live rounds at the car's driver. The man died as a result of gunshot wounds. Three children were in the car – according to reports to SVT, the man was the father of the children. Two of the three children were injured. Police do not wish to specify how the children were injured.

Senior prosecutor Rebecka Boholm, who is leading the preliminary investigation, states that the injured children's condition is stable. She also emphasises that the incident is considered isolated.

– We see it as an isolated incident and there is no further suspect in the case, says Boholm.

The man is reported to have previously been convicted of several crimes, including child abuse offences. Police do not wish to comment on the number of crime victims, citing investigation confidentiality. A technical investigation is ongoing and the scene has been documented with a drone.

The fact that a police officer discharged his service weapon is being investigated separately by the special investigations unit, an independent body within the Police Authority. According to police statistics from 2023, ten fatal shootings have occurred in connection with police live fire during the period 2019–2023, but the figures vary between years.
