Man fatally shot by police in Nynäshamn – children reportedly attacked with knife

A man was shot dead by police in Nynäshamn during Tuesday evening, following a car chase that began with an emergency call reporting kidnapping and attempted murder. According to information obtained by Aftonbladet, two children were found injured in the sought-for vehicle – they are reported to have been attacked with a knife.

The emergency call came in at 20.18. Police immediately began searching for the vehicle and located it around 22.00 on Nynäsvägen, just north of Nynäshamn. The chase lasted several minutes before the car crashed into the road barrier.

– I believe it happened quickly, as it is a motorway, says Carina Skagerlind at the police regional control centre.

A police officer who approached the stopped vehicle made the decision to fire his service weapon at the driver. The man was hit and died.

– It is an adult man. Next of kin have been notified, says Skagerlind.

The two people found in the vehicle – the victims in the investigation into kidnapping and attempted murder – were taken to hospital by ambulance. Police state that the injuries are not life-threatening. Skagerlind declined to comment on reports that they are children.

The incident was witnessed by passing motorists who described a massive police operation along the road.

– We saw around 30 police cars driving at high speed to and from Nynäshamn. It seems like something major is happening. I have never seen so many police cars in my entire life. A couple of ambulances too, said a witness.

Road 73 was closed in both directions after the shooting and remains closed until the forensic examination is completed and the vehicle recovered.

In parallel with the preliminary investigation into kidnapping and attempted murder, a separate review of the police officer's shooting is underway. It is being conducted by the special investigations unit, an independent section within the police.

– It will be investigated by the special investigations unit, says Skagerlind, and declined to answer questions about the sequence of events or the motives behind the decision to shoot.
