Knife-armed man shot outside Palace – detained on probable cause

A man in his 30s was detained after being shot by police at Lejonbacken outside the Royal Palace in Gamla Stan, mitti.se reports. The intervention took place on a Wednesday around 18.30, when police were called to the scene following reports of a man acting aggressively with a knife.

The man was apprehended at 18.50. According to prosecutor Svante Alm, he was struck in the leg by a shot, and reports also exist that a taser was used during the intervention.

– My understanding is that he was shot in the leg, I do not know how many times. There are reports that a taser was used, but I cannot swear that he was hit by it, says Svante Alm.

The man was transported by ambulance to hospital. The injuries were assessed as serious but not life-threatening.

Detained – denies charges

He is now detained on probable cause suspected of a serious knife law offence and serious threats against a public official. According to the minutes from the detention hearing, the man denies the charges, but the prosecutor states that he does not dispute the course of events presented.

– My understanding is that he largely concedes the circumstances at the scene, says Svante Alm.

From previous court documents it emerges that the man has been treated for mental illness. An interview was held with the man on Friday, but according to the prosecutor he gave no clear indication of motive.

– My understanding is that he gave no clear indication on that matter, says Svante Alm.

Motive unclear – believed to have acted alone

The investigation into the motive is ongoing. The prosecutor states that nothing at present indicates that the man acted in coordination with anyone else.

– We are investigating what the possible motive could be, but at present there is nothing suggesting he acted together with anyone else as part of any larger criminal scheme, says Svante Alm.

The man's defence counsel declines to comment.

Police intervention investigated separately

The police officers who fired shots are being investigated separately by the Special Prosecutor's Chamber, which is standard procedure when shootings involving police are concerned.
