Life sentence upheld for man convicted of attempted murder of imam
Örebro District Court has rejected a request to convert the sentence of the 48-year-old Uzbek man who in 2012 attempted to murder imam Obid Nazarov in Strömsund, according to SVT News.
In February 2012, Nazarov, a prominent regime critic, was shot in the head in a stairwell in Strömsund. The man was arrested in 2015 in Russia and subsequently handed over to Sweden.
Östersund District Court initially sentenced him to 18 years' imprisonment for attempted murder. The Court of Appeal increased the sentence in 2016 to life imprisonment.
Both the prosecutor and Nazarov's legal representative argued during the trial that the crime was carried out on behalf of the Uzbek security service, citing the imam's role as a regime critic.
The man, who is serving his sentence at Kumla Prison, applied to have his life sentence converted to a fixed-term sentence. Örebro District Court now rejects that application.
