S-politician threatened on jetty in Gothenburg during election campaign
Jonas Attenius (S), chair of the municipal executive board, was threatened on Saturday evening in the Majorna district of Gothenburg, reports Svenska Dagbladet. Attenius and a colleague were on Klippan steam boat jetty filming a clip for social media when a man nearby began acting aggressively.
– He screams "you bloody traitor, what the hell are you doing on the jetty you bloody social democrat pig, go to hell! Now you're going in the water!", Attenius tells Göteborgs-Posten.
– This was the first time I thought: Now it's happening, now it's over, he says.
Attenius points out in an interview with SVT Nyheter that SD leader Richard Jomshof earlier on Saturday had shared a video clip of him on X, accompanied by the comment "The social democratic betrayal of the nation, in its purest form".
– I don't think Jomshof wishes physical violence against me, but we politicians must realise that our words have power, Attenius tells SVT.
The incident was raised during that evening's prime ministerial debate between Magdalena Andersson (S) and Ulf Kristersson (M). When TT asked Andersson about the threat after the debate, she replied:
– Do you want a party that uses this type of epithet against people who don't think the same as them, to become ministers and be able to use their platforms as ministers to spread that form of hatred? Or should we choose another path?
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson told TT that it is "absolutely terrible if people are threatened in Swedish politics". Regarding Jomshof's comment, he stated that he had not seen it, but added: – But if it is true, that is also absolutely appalling.
Sweden Democrats press secretary Oskar Cavalli Björkman rejects the connection between the threat and Jomshof's post.
– Magdalena Andersson has spent essentially the entire election campaign talking about us, often with completely incomprehensible attacks. To draw such parallels to us is simply in poor taste, Cavalli Björkman tells SVT.
