Sword attack at school in Fagersta: Body discovered, attacker shot
An 18-year-old attacked several people with a sword at Brinellskolan in the Swedish town of Fagersta. Police shot the suspected perpetrator in the leg and arrested him.
Sword attack at Swedish school – body found, attacker arrested
An attacker armed with a sword injured several people at Brinellskolan in the Swedish town of Fagersta on Friday afternoon. According to 20 Minuten, the armed person entered the school building shortly after 2 p.m. Three people were injured. In the evening, police announced that they had discovered a body in the school.
The suspected perpetrator, reported by media to be an 18-year-old former pupil, was arrested by police. The Swedish newspapers Expressen and Aftonbladet report that he was shot in the leg. He is said to have previous convictions for assault.
Police initiated what is known as a heightened alert and systematically searched the school building. According to Aftonbladet, a specialist unit was also on site. Police spokesman Pelle Vamstad told Expressen at around 2.30 p.m. that emergency services were active on site. Police assessed that there was no danger to the public at that time.
Several schools and other facilities in Fagersta were cordoned off by the municipality. Pupils were instructed to remain inside the buildings. The municipality also announced it would provide crisis support.
Sweden's Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer also made a statement. He said he had been informed of reports of the serious incident, telling Expressen that police were working with high intensity, the government was in close contact with the authorities, and was monitoring the situation continuously.
