Three men convicted after fatal lift accident in Sundbyberg
The court has now decided the case against three people who were charged after five construction workers died at a work site in Sundbyberg. Among those convicted is the CEO of the company that managed the project.
The incident occurred when a temporary lift gave way and fell nine floors. Several people were in it when the accident happened. The prosecutor had requested sentences in the form of imprisonment and fines of millions, as the men were considered to have caused five deaths and put two additional people in mortal danger.
During the proceedings, relatives and work colleagues have described what happened. A man who himself was at the site described in an interview with Expressen how he was standing by the lift shortly before it collapsed – something that saved him.
The Swedish Accident Investigation Authority has established that the structure was assembled without sufficient fastenings. The platform came loose from the scaffolding under its own weight.
According to SVT, this is classified as the most serious workplace accident in Sweden for a very long time.
