A prosecutor has sought that two foreign men be taken into custody, suspected of having secretly gathered sensitive information directed against Swedish interests. The alleged activity is said to have occurred in Solna and at another location within the country's borders, and to have taken place over a period of less than a week at the end of June and beginning of July.
The arrest took place on 1 July. One of the men is from Malaysia, the other holds Chinese citizenship. Neither of them is said to have any previous connection to Sweden.
The crime they are suspected of involves working covertly on behalf of another country's account and obtaining or disseminating facts that could jeopardise the nation's security. When the offence is classified as gross, it concerns exceptionally serious circumstances.
During the afternoon, a hearing on remand will be held in a specially secured courtroom at the capital's district court. The investigation is still in its initial phase.
Both the prosecution and the Swedish Security Service (Säpo) refrain from commenting on details, citing confidentiality.
