Celje woman loses €24,000 in online romance scam
A woman from the Celje area met a man online who posed as a surgeon in Asia. She fell in love with him and transferred nearly €24,000 to him.
Police in Celje dealt on Tuesday with a case in which an unknown perpetrator made contact with a citizen through social media. The man introduced himself as a doctor performing surgical procedures in one of the Asian countries. During conversations, he gained her trust and then persuaded her to transfer a total of nearly 24,000 euros to him in several instalments.
Such scams, which police classify among the most common online frauds, follow a similar pattern. Perpetrators find their victims on dating portals, and sometimes they also contact them via social media or email. At the beginning, they are extremely attentive, friendly and quickly express strong emotions. Once they establish an emotional connection, they demand financial assistance, valuable gifts or access to bank details under various pretexts.
Police warn that victims of such scams are often ashamed and therefore remain silent. Experts advise that as soon as someone suspects they have fallen victim to a scam, they should break off all communication. It is also important to preserve the entire history of conversations and to report the matter immediately to the relevant authorities. Additional information is available on the police website.
