Escaped prisoner Srečko Brajdič from Novo mesto arrested after a few hours
The 41-year-old convict from Dob prison has escaped from outside Novo mesto hospital. Police arrested him soon after with the help of citizens.
Escape from hospital and rapid end to search operation
Žurnal24 reports that this morning, shortly after 9.00, 41-year-old Srečko Brajdič, a convict from the Dob Prison Facility near Mirna, escaped from outside Novo Mesto General Hospital. The escape ended early in the afternoon — police arrested him based on information provided by citizens.
Police immediately released a photograph and description of the missing person to the public after the escape. Brajdič was wearing a black shirt and yellow-green bermuda shorts, is approximately 170 cm tall, has his left arm bandaged due to injury, and was barefoot when he escaped.
All those who might have seen him or had any information about his disappearance were urged to call 113 or anonymously call 080 1200.
Citizens helped in apprehension
The appeal bore fruit. "Based on information from citizens, police located the wanted person and arrested him. The escaped prisoner will be handed over to judicial police for further processing. We thank all citizens who helped locate him by providing information, and the media for the rapid publication of the appeal and cooperation," said Alenka Drenik Rangus from the Novo Mesto police directorate.
The National Administration for the Implementation of Criminal Sanctions confirmed that Brajdič escaped after the completion of hospitalisation whilst being escorted back. During this, a judicial police officer sustained a minor injury and received treatment at the same hospital. Police were informed of the incident immediately.
Eleven detainees have escaped since 2016
The administration could not disclose what criminal offences Brajdič was convicted of or what his sentence is, due to personal data protection. However, they added that since 2016, a total of 11 detainees have escaped during escort operations — one of these remains at large.
