After a multi-hour operation, authorities in south-eastern Slovenia have revealed the first official details concerning the death of a Croatian national found dead in a building in the settlement of Uršna Sela. Srđan Aleksić was suspected of an armed robbery at a petrol station in Črnomelj, and was also reportedly linked to a shooting incident in Pula in which a 60-year-old man was seriously injured.
The police operation ended with specialist units raiding the house where the man was hiding. It was confirmed that a man was found dead in the building, but it remains officially unclear whether the death resulted from police action or suicide. All details of the investigation are being gathered.
Dejan Kink, who heads the Police Directorate Novo Mesto, described the sequence of events. Officers first secured the surrounding area, then approached the house. They established that the suspect was inside and was holding one of the residents as a hostage. Through rapid intervention, they freed the captive, but gunfire soon erupted again. The specialist unit then stormed the building, where they found the perpetrator dead. All circumstances are still being collected and examined.
Meanwhile, the Croatian Ministry of Interior has denied claims that Aleksić was a member of any Croatian special unit. Slovenian authorities are continuing criminal investigation to establish the precise sequence of events and the reasons for the suspect's death following the conclusion of the police operation.
