The incident occurred in the afternoon on the edge of Trg Leona Štuklja. Based on information gathered so far, a dispute broke out between two groups of people, during which the suspected 29-year-old shot a 42-year-old man from the Maribor area and slightly wounded him. A single shot was fired.
Head of Maribor criminal investigation Stanko Vidovič said at a press conference today that the investigation is being conducted in connection with suspected offences of causing minor bodily injury and endangering public safety. "We have identified several people involved in the incident, including the 29-year-old, and we are asking the public to provide us with any useful information about his whereabouts and to report this to the police helpline 113 or the anonymous hotline 080 1200," Vidovič added.
Multiple police patrols were dispatched to the scene and immediately began an intensive search for those involved. On Monday, they examined the scene and seized items relevant to the further criminal proceedings. One person was temporarily detained, but was later released as suspicions of their involvement were not confirmed.
Vidovič also revealed that some of the people involved in the incident had previously been dealt with for violent criminal offences.
According to unofficial reports in the newspaper Večer, fitness trainer N. O. allegedly shot at the victim, identified as G. Ž., and hit him in the leg. The two groups are said to have been in dispute for some time — approximately a month ago they allegedly had a physical altercation. According to unofficial accounts, those involved allegedly met in the car park of a nearby shopping centre, City, before the shooting, after which the incident moved to Trg Leona Štuklja.
Police currently have no information about any related incident at another location, but all circumstances are still being investigated. The investigation also includes the question of how a car came to drive into the pedestrian area.
