Google News SI — Crime reports that police continue their investigation into the shooting at Trg Leona Štuklja in the centre of Maribor, in which a 42-year-old man from the city's vicinity suffered minor injuries.
According to the information gathered so far, the incident occurred during a dispute between two groups of people. One of those involved fired at the 42-year-old man and caused him minor bodily injury.
Police have identified several people involved in the event. Among them was a 29-year-old man who is being sought by law enforcement authorities on suspicion of the criminal offence of causing minor bodily injury and endangering public safety.
The Maribor Police Directorate released a photograph of the wanted man to the media and public and called for information about his movements. His name and surname were not disclosed in this connection.
As this decision raised questions, the editorial office requested clarification from the Maribor Police Directorate.
Principle of proportionality
Police explained that they are permitted under applicable legislation to publish a photograph of a suspect together with a more detailed description and other data relevant to locating him and to the needs of the investigation.
"In accordance with the principle of proportionality in the disclosure of personal data, we disclose data that are necessary for identifying a person — in this case a photograph — which could help locate the wanted person as soon as possible," the Maribor police directorate said.
According to police assessment, the suspect's name and surname are not necessary for identifying the person and were therefore not disclosed.
Investigation continues
Following the shooting, crime scene investigators carried out an examination of the scene of the criminal offence and seized objects important for the further criminal proceedings. The gathering of information and investigation of the suspicions of criminal offences of causing minor bodily injury and endangering public safety are ongoing.
