A night-time check in Banská Bystrica uncovered a curious case of vehicle theft. Officers at a routine inspection were suspicious of the behaviour of a 39-year-old driver who had been speeding through the city streets. Upon checking his documents, law enforcement officers discovered that the man from Poland had no vehicle papers with him.
Further investigation brought a surprising turn of events. The vehicle that the foreigner was driving had been stolen. Interestingly, however, at the time the perpetrator was detained, it had not yet been registered as having been stolen. Police therefore contacted the owner, who was confident that her car was safely parked in front of her house. When she went to check, she discovered that the vehicle was no longer there.
"The vehicle check returned negative; the car was not being sought at that time. However, the operations officer telephoned the vehicle owner, who was convinced that she had her car parked in front of her house," the Banská Bystrica regional police reported on social media, as cited by Topky.sk.
Police officers restricted the driver's personal freedom and took him to a cell. An investigator charged him with theft and submitted a proposal for his remand in custody. The judge agreed with this proposal and the man ended up in custody.
The case demonstrates that even during routine checks, police officers can uncover serious criminal offences. In this instance, the perpetrator was detained before the owner had even noticed that her car had gone missing.
