Former police director faces charge of inaction before gymnasium attack

On Thursday 15 May, a trial began at the Poprad District Court workplace in Kežmarok with Martin Glevaňák, former director of the district department of the Police Force in Spišská Stará Ves, according to ta3.com.

Glevaňák faces charges for the offence of dereliction of duty by a public official. According to the indictment, before the tragedy he incorrectly assessed serious information about a student as facts without criminal law relevance and failed to act on his official duties.

The attack on the gymnasium in Spišská Stará Ves took place on 16 January 2025. In it, the deputy head of the school and one student lost their lives, and another student suffered injuries. Glevaňák was charged in March 2025, shortly after the attack he was removed from his post. Police president Ľubomír Solák also left his position.

Attacker Samuel Straško was found guilty at the end of September this year by the Specialised Criminal Court and sentenced to 25 years imprisonment in a facility with the maximum level of security. The sentence has not yet become final.
