In recent days, fraudulent text messages have been spreading intensively, in which the senders pose as traffic police officers and demand that recipients pay a fine for alleged violations of traffic regulations. Perpetrators in the messages state that their alleged offence was detected by an automated surveillance system. They cite a short timeframe for payment as the reason for urgency – most often two days. The aim is to create panic in the recipient, which would cause them to click on the attached web link without verifying the authenticity of the notice.
According to the statement of the security department, state bodies never demand payment of sanctions via mobile messages. Official notifications of offences are delivered by post or electronically to a mailbox on the portal slovensko.sk. A proper decision must contain a precise description of the conduct, designation of the acting authority, a file reference, evidence material and information about the right to appeal.
The police cite the following as warning signs of fraud: unfamiliar or hidden telephone number of the sender, a suspicious link, artificially created urgency and a request for sensitive banking information.
People should not respond to such notices, should not open links and should not share personal or payment data. If someone has inadvertently entered their card details or made a transfer, they should immediately contact their bank and report the entire matter to the police.
