A 47-year-old man from Gelnica killed his wife on Saturday morning. The woman, who worked as a teacher, suffered dozens of stab wounds. The accused has confessed and a judge has remanded him in custody.

The Spišské district town of Gelnica experienced a tragedy on Saturday the likes of which it had not known before. 47-year-old Tomáš V. murdered his wife Zuzana, who was five years his junior. The woman had two children and worked as a teacher at a local primary school.
The incident took place shortly after midday in a single-storey building which the family used as a recreational property. In the hallway behind the front door, the attacker assaulted his partner with a pocket folding knife for reasons that have not yet been clarified. He inflicted numerous stab and cut wounds on her abdomen, limbs, back and neck. During the initial examination, paramedics counted more than thirty injuries, with an autopsy potentially revealing further ones. The injuries were fatal – the woman died at the scene.
Their son, who was sitting on a bench in front of the building at the time of the attack, witnessed the entire incident.
Police began pursuing the case as an exceptionally serious crime of murder, carrying a threat of 15 to 20 years' imprisonment. Later, when the man was apprehended while attempting to flee, the charge was elevated to murder with an aggravated sentence of 20 to 25 years or life imprisonment. The Košice regional prosecutor subsequently recommended his remand in custody. The Košice district court ruled on this on Tuesday afternoon and remanded the accused in custody on grounds of risk of flight and danger to the public.
