The investigation into the death of a woman from Hnilecká Valley contained serious shortcomings according to the chief prosecutor, including improper assessment of the criminal offence and inappropriate treatment of the victim.

The General Prosecutor of the Slovak Republic has described the course of the investigation into the case from Gelnica as alarming. A young woman from Hnilecká Valley, who repeatedly approached the police for help regarding domestic violence, ultimately lost her life.
According to the head of the prosecutor's office, the work of criminal justice authorities was marked by several failures. One of these was incorrect classification of the criminal offence, as the seriousness of the act was underestimated. Another shortcoming was an insensitive approach to the victim during proceedings.
The case sparked a broader discussion about how institutions function in combating domestic violence. In response to the tragedy, the newspaper Sme launched a call to which numerous women with experience of similar situations responded. Many of them described the procedures of police, prosecutors and courts as inappropriate and failing.
The General Prosecutor's Office announced that the police officers and prosecutors responsible would face disciplinary liability for their shortcomings. The perpetrator himself, who murdered the woman, has already been convicted.
