General Prosecutor removes prosecutors after teacher's death in Gelnica
The leadership of the district prosecutor's office in Spišská Nová Ves has lost its heads of office. This decision was made by General Prosecutor Maroš Žilinka after an inspection revealed serious failings in the criminal proceedings that preceded the death of a teacher in Gelnica.
The victim was Zuzana V., who was killed on 20 June in Gelnica by her husband Tomáš V. He now faces charges of the particularly serious crime of murder and remains in custody.
The issue concerns pre-trial proceedings against the perpetrator before the tragedy. According to findings by the General Prosecutor's Office, it did not proceed in accordance with the law. The act for which the man was prosecuted was incorrectly legally classified. Instead of the misdemeanour of dangerous threatening, it should have concerned the crime of ill-treatment of a close and dependent person.
The Police Force accepted the conclusions of the General Prosecutor's Office for the record. The office of the Police Force will be subject to a methodological review of the file, which is to assess the procedures of officers in dealing with cases of domestic violence, risk assessment and protection of endangered persons. The findings will also be used in the training of police officers with the aim of better protecting victims of domestic violence.
The Ministry of Justice confirmed that its own supervision of the case is consistent with the conclusions of the prosecutor's office. Complete results of the inspection will be announced at the end of July.
The Police Force meanwhile emphasised that it stands by the results of the independent supervisory body and expert department, which the General Prosecutor himself did not dispute in his examination of the criminal case.
