Joj television first reported on Tuesday evening that a 58-year-old man had been found dead in the village. A police statement on Wednesday clarified the circumstances: the victim was stabbed by his son during a quarrel while in an intoxicated state. A breathalyser test showed a blood alcohol level of 1.98 per mille in the suspect.
Investigators opened a criminal case for particularly serious manslaughter. The motive for the murder and the exact circumstances of the case are still under investigation.
Local mayor: "This is not a typical case"
Mayor Roland Labancz confirmed to ujszo.com that both individuals involved are residents of Bátorkeszi. The victim had previously worked in the village's public works programme, but had not had such a connection with the municipality in recent times.
"We are a small community with 3,500 residents, such a case is not typical at all, it is not connected to the public safety situation, this was a family conflict," the mayor said, adding that he could not recall when a murder last took place in the village.
Suspect returning from abroad, previous conflicts
According to local sources, the 34-year-old suspect worked abroad and only returned to Bátorkeszi occasionally. Based on posts that appeared on social media, disputes between father and son were regular when he came back. According to those who knew him, the perpetrator may have had drug problems and was known to have a conflictual nature.
Local people are treating the crime as a family conflict; police investigation is ongoing.
