Dance evening at cultural centre ends in blood and injuries
A dance event in the Slovak village of Záhorská Ves, a municipality near the Austrian border, descended into a mass brawl between two families on Saturday, 26 September. According to Blesk.cz, seventeen-year-old Andrej fared worst, his hand injury requiring hospitalisation at a hospital in Bratislava.
The family of Terézie (42) — her husband, son Andrej and twenty-two-year-old daughter — came to the local cultural centre intending to spend a quiet evening. However, among the other visitors was a family with whom Terézie said they had long-standing disagreements.
Tensions escalated into conflict when one member of the other family approached Terézie's husband, spat in his face and kicked him. Within moments, more people became involved in the brawl and chaos erupted on the dance floor.
Andrej became caught up in the conflict whilst trying to defend his relatives. In doing so, he thrust his hand through a glass door and sustained a serious laceration. The family decided to leave the building, but found no peace outside either.
Outside the cultural centre, Andrej lost consciousness due to heavy bleeding. Whilst security staff attempted to revive him, the conflict reignited — this time directed at Terézie's daughter. When her husband rushed to her aid, he too was attacked, according to the mother's account.
Despite his serious hand injury, Andrej attempted to protect his father and sister. He ended up on the ground, where according to Terézie, other brawl participants beat him. His sister was meanwhile being struck repeatedly with fists by her attackers. A few bystanders eventually managed to pull the girl out of the crowd — Terézie is convinced they may have saved her life.
The mother eventually managed to get her son out of the brawl. The family took him home, where they attempted to stop the bleeding and called the emergency services. Paramedics transported Andrej to Kramáre Hospital in Bratislava.
Nearly two weeks have passed since the incident. According to his mother, her son's wounds became complicated by an infection. "I worry about him every day, whether someone will beat him up again. My son can't even defend himself now — his whole hand is stitched from his fingers all the way to his elbow," Terézie told the Slovak newspaper Nový Čas. Following the event, she filed a criminal complaint against the other family.
Slovak police confirmed they are investigating the events in Záhorská Ves. The case is being investigated by officers under the district police headquarters in Malacky. Michal Szeiff, spokesman for the Bratislava regional police, stated that a shortened investigation is currently underway — officers are determining the circumstances of the incident and carrying out the necessary procedural steps. It is not yet known whether anyone has been charged.
