Court acquits Košice woman of charge of attempted murder of husband
The Košice City Court has acquitted a 47-year-old woman whom prosecutors pursued for the serious crime of attempted murder of her husband. The incident occurred in January 2024 in a flat in the Ťahanovce housing estate.
According to the charges, the woman was to have stabbed her sleeping husband in the chest with a kitchen knife. The man was at risk of bleeding to death; doctors saved him in hospital. The defendant faced 20 to 25 years in prison or life imprisonment.
During the investigation, the woman initially confessed, but later changed her statement. She claimed that she was not in the flat at the time of the incident. Her husband, in turn, stated that he had injured himself – he had slipped while getting down from the kitchen worktop with a knife in his hand.
The court ordered a psychological examination. Experts identified battered woman syndrome in the defendant. On the basis of this report and other evidence, the court issued an acquittal verdict.
