Mother staged child drowning, sentenced to 17 years for his murder
The district court in Žilina has delivered its verdict in the case of a 32-year-old woman charged with killing her own three-year-old child. According to the ruling, she will remain behind bars for 17 years. The sentence is not yet final.
The tragedy occurred in July of last year. The accused called for help, claiming her son had drowned in Liptovská Mara. She maintained that she had attempted to resuscitate him. However, rescue workers discovered that the boy's clothes were dry and his vital functions had ceased about an hour before their arrival.
According to the case file, the accused first strangled and suffocated the child. She used a pillow and a dressing gown belt to carry out the act. Under the influence of narcotics, she committed the deed, which she subsequently concealed as an unfortunate accident.
By the end of the previous year, the prosecution had reached a preliminary plea agreement with the accused. This agreement had provided for 19 years in custody. At the main hearing, however, the woman rejected this course of action. Later, after the indictment was read, she confessed to the act.
A psychiatric examination was conducted by expert Ján Uhrin. The conclusion of the expert assessment states that the accused does not suffer from a mental disorder. Her diagnosis includes methamphetamine addiction and an unstable personality with a tendency towards impulsive acts.
The prosecutor recommended a twenty-year sentence, and the defence counsel requested fifteen years. The judge ultimately decided on 17 years in a facility with the strictest regime. The woman was also ordered to undergo mandatory anti-drug treatment.
