Knife attack at school in Staskov: teacher dies, child seriously injured
A pupil attacked teachers and classmates with a knife in the Slovak municipality of Staskov. A 61-year-old woman died, and a child is in life-threatening condition.

According to the Kleine Zeitung, citing the Slovak news agency TASR, a pupil at a primary and secondary school in Staskov in the Cadca district stabbed teachers and classmates with a knife. A 61-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
A child was flown by rescue helicopter to hospital in critical condition. A 44-year-old woman sustained stab wounds to the chest and was also transported to a clinic by helicopter.
The school is located approximately 185 kilometres north-east of Bratislava. "The situation is under control and at this moment no one faces an immediate threat," police stated. Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok and Education Minister Tomas Drucker travelled immediately to the scene.
According to media reports, the alleged perpetrator attended the eighth grade at the school. No further information was initially available regarding the motive for the attack and the exact circumstances.
Prime Minister Robert Fico expressed deep concern. "Schools must be a safe place for our children, otherwise we will have no future," he wrote on Facebook. Fico was himself seriously injured in an assassination attempt in May 2024. President Peter Pellegrini expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased. He emphasised that the incident was a warning for society as a whole – it required more peace, respect and mutual recognition.
