A twenty-three-year-old man who sustained stab wounds several days ago during a scuffle in the historic centre of Košice has died from his injuries. The violent confrontation took place on Vrátenska Street, where three men met. One of them was attacked by assailants who inflicted fatal wounds on him. Witnesses provided immediate assistance to the man, but despite the ambulance service transporting the injured person to hospital, he died a day later.

Košice criminal police are investigating the case as murder. Their spokeswoman Jana Illéšová confirmed that shortly after the incident, officers detained one person. However, after taking necessary steps, they released him as the conditions for remand in custody were not met. The investigation continues, and the authorities are not releasing further information regarding the ongoing inquiry.

At the scene of the tragedy, the victim's family lit candles.

The incident has sparked discussion about safety in the city centre. Igor Holéczy, a candidate for mayor of Košice's Old Town, warned that similar nighttime confrontations are not isolated occurrences. According to him, semi-organised groups of young men operate in the municipal park, coordinating attacks on random victims through mobile phones.

The Korzár newspaper has previously reported cases in which assailants deliberately provoked conflicts, beat victims and disappeared. One of these incidents occurred in the municipal park near the railway station, where a twenty-year-old man was attacked. Police recorded two similar cases at that time.

Igor Kupec, a Košice tour guide, compared the situation to the wild nineties and called on the city leadership to devote greater attention to order and safety in the historic core.
