A young man died in hospital after being stabbed during a conflict in the centre of Košice. The incident occurred on Vrátna Street, near Dominikanské Square, where several businesses are located.
According to information from Korzár, three men became involved in a dispute during which one of them sustained stab wounds. Emergency responders provided first aid at the scene; despite this, the following day he succumbed to his injuries at the healthcare facility.
Regional police spokeswoman Jana Illésová confirmed that investigators are treating the case as homicide. "Detectives are carrying out the necessary procedural steps to clarify all the circumstances of the case," she stated. Shortly after the incident, one person was detained, but was later released as the conditions for remand in custody were not met.
Police have not yet released further details, citing reasons that it could jeopardise the ongoing investigation. The identity of the victim remains unknown, as does whether other suspects have been identified.
The case attracted public attention following comments made by Igor Holéczy of Progressive Slovakia, who is running as a candidate for mayor of Košice's Old Town. Holéczy stated that he had seen footage from security cameras and claims that the violence was not directly connected to the surrounding businesses, although it occurred in an area with nightlife. The deceased's relatives later came to the scene and lit candles in his memory.
In connection with the case, Holéczy called for an expansion of the camera system, better street lighting and an increase in the number of night-time police patrols. Košice's night-time mayor Vladimír Eperješi, however, cautioned that conclusions about the overall safety of the locality should not be drawn from a single tragedy. "The fact that more people stay in the historic centre in the evening does not automatically make it a dangerous place," he said. He added that his office is working with residents, business owners and institutions in seeking preventive measures.
