Man released from prison stabbed his wife in Gelnica after she sought restraining order
A 47-year-old teacher from Gelnica lost her life at the hands of her husband. According to investigators, the perpetrator inflicted 56 stab wounds on her. The tragedy occurred just 11 days after the man was released from detention.
As early as February, the woman requested a court order for a restraining order. Her application was rejected, however, because her husband was in detention at that time for dangerous threats. On 9 June, the court sentenced him to an eight-month suspended sentence with a deferral period of 15 months, after which he was released to freedom.
This case raised serious questions about the protection of domestic violence victims. General Prosecutor Maroš Žilinka responded by pointing to the need for systematic work with perpetrators. Justice Minister Boris Susko, for his part, expressed the conviction that it was probably a failure of a specific individual.
