The specialized court in Pezinok is continuing proceedings concerning the murder of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and planned murders of prosecutors. A key witness is a former member of the secret service.
Retrial in murder of journalist Kuciak: former TIS agent to testify
On Wednesday, proceedings continued at the Banská Bystrica Specialised Criminal Court regarding the death of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and planned attacks on prosecutors. A key development is the testimony of Petr Tóth, who formerly worked for the Slovak Information Service.
In the first round of proceedings in January 2020, Tóth stated before the court that Marian K. and Alena Zs. were jointly preparing Kuciak's liquidation. According to his account, Marian K. was to first place the journalist under surveillance. His Internet relay was meant to serve as a cover for the later murder. Two years later, in September 2022, however, Tóth refused to give any testimony.
In the attack in February 2018 in the village of Veľká Mača, not only the journalist himself but also his fiancée Martina Kušnírová lost their lives. Marian K. and Alena Zs. are accused of ordering this murder. The Supreme Court has twice quashed previous verdicts, which is why this case is now being tried for the third time.
In previous proceedings, the court imposed 25-year prison sentences on the direct perpetrators, Miroslav Marček and Tamás Szabó. Intermediary Zoltán Andruskó received a 15-year sentence. Additionally, Dušan K. and Darko D. are accused of preparing murders of prosecutors Maroš Žilinka, Daniel Lipšic and Peter Šufliarsky. These attacks ultimately did not take place.
