Shipping fraud in Slovakia: police investigate ONET digital company
The Slovak Trade Inspection warns of suspicious demands for compensation for undelivered parcels. Police in Bratislava are investigating the case.
Consumers receive payment demands for undelivered parcels – police suspect attempted fraud
According to uzitocna.pravda.sk, the Slovak Trade Inspection (SOI) has recorded several complaints from consumers in recent times who were contacted by Slovenian company ONET digital d.o.o. Consumers received written demands to pay compensation for failing to collect an ordered parcel.
The SOI had doubts about the company's procedures and the documents being sent. It therefore called on the trader to explain the situation and submit the necessary documents. However, the SOI did not receive them.
According to the complaints, ONET digital d.o.o. was said to have engaged debt collection firm DEBTCOLLECT.NET to inform consumers of the transfer of the debt to another company. This firm subsequently engaged law firm HORVAT LAW FIRM, which was to recover the claims from consumers through non-judicial proceedings.
Since multiple submissions from consumers had similar content and the requested documents from the trader did not arrive, the SOI forwarded the matter to the Police Corps of the Slovak Republic. The Criminal Police Department of the Police Corps Headquarters stated that the circumstances of the case give rise to suspicion of the offence of fraud in the attempt stage. The case is being handled by the District Police Headquarters Bratislava II.
The SOI recommends that consumers do not respond to such demands with payment and instead contact the inspection directly or the police.
