Košice regional police are warning of fraudulent SMS messages purporting to be from traffic police or parking services. The fraudsters' aim is to obtain money and sensitive personal data.
Fraudulent SMS in Košice region: police launch criminal investigation
Košice regional police are alerting the public to a wave of fraudulent SMS messages designed to extort money or sensitive personal data from people. As Korzár reports, police drew attention to the problem via social media.
In some messages, fraudsters impersonate traffic police and claim the recipient has failed to pay a speeding fine. In other cases, they pose as parking service operators and cite a fictitious outstanding parking payment.
"The message is designed to create stress and force you to act quickly. Time limits appear in it, threats of additional fees or various instructions to reply to the SMS and subsequently open an attached link," police stated.
People should not click on such links, should not reply to the message, and should in no circumstances enter personal data or card payment details. In case of doubt, police recommend verifying the information exclusively through the official website, application, or direct contact with the relevant institution — not through a link delivered in an SMS.
Police have launched a criminal investigation in the matter.
