Michalovce: juvenile held child over balcony railing, faces up to ten years in prison
Police in the Košice region have launched criminal proceedings for the particularly serious crime of attempted murder following an incident that occurred on Thursday, 4 June, shortly before 12.00 in Michalovce district. According to spravy.stvr.sk, the case took place at a facility providing substitute family environment and professional assistance to vulnerable families.
According to information from Lenka Ivanová, spokeswoman for the Košice Regional Police Headquarters, a juvenile placed in the facility on the basis of a court decision took a minor child from inside the building onto the balcony of the first floor. There she allegedly grabbed the child by the leg, shook him and held him head-down over the railing. She threatened to let him go.
"This conduct was observed by one of the facility's employees. She made contact with the juvenile and tried to calm her down to prevent unnecessary tragedy. The juvenile then entered a room with the child," said Ivanová.
The child was not killed precisely because of the timely intervention of this employee, who subsequently called the police and transported the child to Michalovce hospital. Police restricted the liberty of the juvenile, who is in a close relationship with the child, at the scene itself.
Given the severity of the case and the fact that the victim is a minor, the case was taken over by an investigator from the criminal police department of the regional headquarters in Košice. Procedural actions took place with the participation of a social welfare officer and a psychologist. Following their completion, the suspect was placed in police custody.
"Expert witnesses from various fields will be involved in the further proceedings. Expert reports will be prepared, after which a decision will be made regarding further action in the case," Ivanová added.
The Criminal Code stipulates a sentence of 15 to 20 years' deprivation of liberty for such an act. Since the suspect is a juvenile, the sentence is reduced by half under the law.
