Court released husband of murdered Zuzana from Gelnice after expert deemed him non-dangerous

The man who murdered his wife Zuzana in Gelnice spent only eleven days in prison. After being released at liberty, he stabbed her with a pocket knife. When deciding on his conditional sentence, the court relied also on an expert assessment according to which he posed no danger.

When investigating the first attack on his wife, the expert found no signs of post-traumatic stress disorder in the victim. The court took this conclusion into account when deciding on a more lenient sentence. The aggressor thus needed only a brief prison term, after which he returned home and committed the murder.

The case reveals serious shortcomings in assessing risk in domestic violence. The expert evaluation, which failed to capture the victim's psychological state or the actual threat posed by the perpetrator, led to the release of a dangerous individual. The consequences were tragic.
