Triple murder in Vranov: accused released from custody, to end up in hospital
The investigation into the brutal January murder of three relatives in Vranov nad Topľou has ended unexpectedly. The prosecutor discontinued criminal proceedings against a 35-year-old man after experts found him to have been mentally incompetent at the time of the act.

The case in which three members of one family died in Vranov nad Topľou at the start of the year has reached a surprising conclusion. The investigator requested the prosecutor's office to discontinue criminal proceedings against the 35-year-old son of the victims. The reason was the conclusions of an expert report, according to which the young man was mentally ill at the moment of the act and incapable of understanding the consequences of his actions. The bloody incident took place in a flat on the Okulka housing estate in early January. Neighbours called the police due to loud arguments coming from the flat. Officers had to force the door open. Inside they found the dead bodies of a 65-year-old father, his 61-year-old wife and a 42-year-old daughter. According to preliminary investigation results, all three died following an attack with a cold weapon.
The only surviving household member was the couple's son. Police officers detained him directly in the flat and charged him with triple murder. Subsequently, a judge placed him in investigative custody.
Regional police spokeswoman Jana Ligdayová confirmed that the investigator had submitted a proposal to discontinue proceedings to the Regional Prosecutor's Office in Prešov. Its spokesman Michal Sovič announced that expert examination of the accused's mental state had ruled out his criminal responsibility.
The prosecutor closed the case by discontinuing proceedings and at the same time requested the court to issue a preliminary order for compulsory treatment. The judge of the District Court Prešov granted the proposal. The accused was therefore released from the cell and transferred to a healthcare facility, where he will remain under expert supervision. The further course of action will be determined by doctors and the relevant authorities according to his health condition and applicable legal regulations.
