A woman was stabbed to death at a cottage by her partner, who had attacked and threatened her just months earlier. Judges handed him a suspended sentence, after which he was released.

On Saturday 20 June, Zuzana V., a teacher and mother of two, met her death at a family cottage near Gelnica. Her partner attacked her with a pocket knife and inflicted dozens of wounds to her abdomen, limbs, back and neck, writes Postoj citing Korzár.
The boy she had in common with the man was found sitting on a bench in front of the building at the time of the attack. The perpetrator left the scene in his own vehicle, but police caught him within hours. He now faces twenty to twenty-five years or life imprisonment for murder. Korzár sources indicate that he confessed to the deed.
The timeline is dramatic: the murder occurred only eleven days after the man left his prison cell. He had already attacked her in February under the influence of alcohol and threatened to kill her. For these threats, the Košice regional court on 9 June sentenced him to eight months conditional and ordered outpatient addiction treatment. The decision became immediately final and the man was released, confirmed spokesman Anna Pančurová for TASR.
No one told the victim that the violent offender was free again. According to a statement by prison officials to Denník N, she did not ask to be informed. At the end of February, Zuzana V. had requested a protective order from the court in Spišská Nová Ves – a distance of fifty metres and a ban on entering her flat. The judges rejected the proposal in March because the man was already in prison at that time.
The head of the justice ministry, Boris Susko, commented on the case. According to him, it currently appears that it was a failure of an individual, not the system. He recalled that no legislation would stop a person who decides to commit such an act. At the same time, he promised a review of the court file and possible systemic changes if a state failure is proven.
General Prosecutor Maroš Žilinka takes a different view. On social media, he emphasised the need for genuine work with offenders dependent on narcotic substances, not merely the appearance of it.
When a reporter from Denník N asked Prime Minister Robert Fico for a comment, he walked past her without a word and shook his head. His accompanying official, Tibor Gašpar, laughed whilst doing so.
